I personally believe that once a Direct Support Professional (DSP), always a DSP. I’ve never met a good DSP who walked away the same as when they started the job.
The DSP role is not a position everyone should take on, even though anyone can apply. It takes more strength, courage, and heart to help someone navigate a fulfilling life. It’s not a job for the faint of heart, or those who don’t see this as a profession. Nor is it a job for someone who just doesn’t want to put in the work. I say kindly, “walk away and don’t apply”
I say this all the time: “Whether you’re in someone’s life for 5 mins, 5 hours, or 5 days, you’re part of their life and story. My prayer is that it’s always a good part. If this job is done right, not only will you be teaching and supporting, but you will also be learning as well. I’ve heard this job described by DSPs as “rewarding, fun, educational, and heartfelt.” Another thing I hear a lot is that this job causes people to grow as a person. Who doesn’t want to grow to be a better version of themselves?
That’s not saying that this job isn’t hard work cause it is! You have the blinders “pulled off” your eyes, and you see things from a very different perspective. You see the raw emotions the individuals harbor, the judgment of the community, and the ignorance of the Government. It’s hard to ignore the “gaps” and “many relapses” in services. And there are even moments when you have to be the only person standing up for what is right. You learn the policies and procedures are made for a “one-size-fits-all” situation, and life isn’t like that. Frustration in this job is real, and at times it can feel too much.
But with the right heart and devotion, you can help fill in the gaps and help advocate against the relapses. You can make a difference in the world; you can be part of the change and the growth of a culture. You can help make it stronger and better, simply by coming to work with a full heart and an open mind. Your work helps a person get closer to reaching their goals and dreams, and to dealing with setbacks. Your work can be the difference between someone living and someone having an abundant life.
This job helps bring people together but also brings worlds together. You’re helping us unite with each other, all the while just supporting us in our own lives! So if this sounds like something that is for you, then become a DSP, someone is waiting for you to support them in this world!
