Every day, everywhere, someone is believing that they are supported. Perhaps by a spouse or loved one, or maybe by a parent who refuses to give up on their child. Or maybe a teacher who sees the potential in you, or maybe a boss who appreciates and sees all that you bring to the table. You can even find support in an animal like my doggie Noel! We all need it, despite many of us saying, I’m independent and don’t need support; I can do it on my own”.
There are moments in our lives when it is evident that we need support, and as a person with a disability, that is a daily reality and thought. Some need support before they get their feet on the ground in the morning; some just need someone to talk to and help us process life. Some need support finding and surviving our employment, and some just need support as they navigate some hardships like death. For me, it’s many supports, and I’m thankful I have a unique one. In the disability sector (here in NY), they are known as Direct Support Professionals ( or DSPs). This Kind of support is like no other; they support us in multiple areas of our lives and most of the time with their big hearts on their sleeves.
I say this all the time: “Anyone can be a DSP, but not everyone was called to be one.” It’s 100% true. Another saying that gets said but not always applied is that every person should have a DSP that suits/fits their personality as well as their needs. True, but with the turnover not always able to be applied. The workforce is being strangled and brought down every day. Mostly due to low wages, too much overtime, and being burnt out.
Despite that, many people still feel that this job is rewarding, and it is. That moment when you get to witness a moment where they conquer a goal or dream. Why am I telling you all this? Because this is a shout-out to all the Amazing DSPs, as DSP Week approaches (Sept 13th-19th 2026)! Let’s celebrate those who support us in our daily/weekly lives.
